CITY OF KATY (Covering Katy News) - The owners of MKT Distillery are located in the retired American Rice Growers dryer and they plan to once again light a large Christmas tree on top of their facility at dusk on November 30. It will be their second annual Christmas tree lighting, but it's not the first time a Christmas tree has glowed from atop a Katy Rice dryer.
"When we started the process of creating MKT Distillery, we knew that we would love to reinstate the tradition of the Christmas tree on top of the driers," said Nick Jessett, CEO and Partner.
The J. V. Cardiff Rice Drier was the tallest rice drier in the country when it opened in 1966.
"A very brave George Cardiff would climb up to the top of the J. V. Cardiff and Sons dryer and install this 35-foot Christmas tree, wrote Katy historian Carol Adams in a Katy Fulshear Lifestyles and Homes article. Click for the article.
By 1999, Cardiff retired and shut down the facility, ending the tradition. Now MKT Distillery is reviving it.
"We were extremely fortunate and lucky to be able to build MKT within the drier erected in 1947 by the Katy Division of the American Rice Growers. On December 16th, 2018, we brought the tradition back," Jessett said. "We installed a 20 foot pole on top of the ARG drier. "We aren’t sure how far away it can be seen, but we have it on the roof close to downtown Katy as our salute to the history of Katy."
On Saturday, November 30, the tree will be illuminated again. The light will be turned on at dusk which is estimated to be at 5:21 p.m.
Musician Matt Hurst will be performing from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. El Canton Firewood Pizzeria will also be on hand serving food to go with the music, cocktails, spirits and a kids bounce house.
The MKT Distillery is located at 5373 1st St, Katy, TX 77493, near the No Label Brewery.
