CITY OF KATY (Covering Katy News) - Rachel Hollywood, a first grade teacher at Hutsell Elementary in the City of Katy, was given a check for $5,000 for being a safe driver. The check presentation was held Friday morning at the school on Franz Road in the City of Katy.
Hollywood won the grand prize from the makers of the SAFE 2 SAVE app which keeps track of the amount of time motorists drive without touching their cell phones.
The check could not come at a better time for Hollywood who is pregnant with her second child and will soon be on unpaid maternity.
"For me it's really great to have that to use for when I'm on maternity leave," Hollywood told Covering Katy News.
She has been a first grade teacher for seven years at Hutsell Elementary School.
She and her husband both use the SAFE 2 SAVE app.
"It was a family goal to put the phones down since we do have a child in the car and we want to be really respectful of everybody else on the road," Hollywood said.
The competition was open to all Houston area adults and ran from July 10 to Sept. 23. Hollywood was selected at random and met the eligibility requirements of accumulating 400 points, and redeeming the points at least one time during the competition.
The more safe driving time app users accumulate, the more prizes they win. There are numerous prizes that can be redeemed with the earned points. Users can receive a free Big Mac from McDonald’s, a chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A, and a Bloomin’ Onion from Outback. The Dish Society restaurant and others also provide prizes for winners.
"I earn enough points to get a free sandwich every week," said Alex Bunch of The Woodlands Financial Group who presented the check to Hollywood. TWFG sells all types of insurance, including auto insurance.
Memorial Hermann Life Flight is the title sponsor of the program. Life Flight is an air ambulance service that frequently responds to very serous car accidents and transports victims by helicopter for emergency medical treatment.
“The engagement of SAFE 2 SAVE users, new and old, affirmed all of the work that our partners on the app, first responders, government officials and our internal team put into educating people about distracted driving” said Christina Rudolph, Vice President of Operations for SAFE 2 SAVE. “We were proud to have TWFG sponsor this Greater Houston competition with such generosity, and proud to align with Memorial Hermann Life Flight to help drive change across Greater Houston.”
