ALIEF (Covering Fort Bend News) – Just as the girls’ teams from Fort Bend ISD did in the first round of their basketball playoffs, the Fort Bend boys’ postseason qualifiers took three out of four games from teams from Katy ISD in the opening (bi-district) round. Elkins, the top seed from District 20-6A, pulled away from Katy Taylor in the second half to win 66-44 and earn a chance to play Houston Lamar in the area round.
Taylor had to win a Friday tie-breaker vs. the Katy Tigers to get the last available playoff berth. The Mustangs had gone 6-7 in District 19-6A games if you count the extra one. So Elkins – 13-1 in their District 20-6A games and 28-7 overall (ranked 21st in the latest TABC Class 6A statewide poll) – was a prohibitive favorite.
The Knights looked the part in the first four minutes. Collin Warren’s slam-dunk after a backcourt steal and his two three-point bombs made it 8-1. Then Taylor fought back to within a single point, 11-10 after Aidan Walsh completed his “and-one” three-point play at the 2-minute mark.
That was as close as the game ever got, and the Knights never trailed.
Their star, University of Texas commit Donovan Williams, scored a modest 18 points including single baskets in each of the first two quarters – but both were timely. He scored on the Knights’ next possession when the Mustangs got the margin down to one in the first, and when Taylor fought back to within 22-19 in the second, Williams’ short jumper bumped the lead up to 24-19. Warren converted a turnover into another long-range three seconds later for a 27-19 advantage. Walsh managed another three-point play to keep Taylor within eight, 29-21, at halftime.
The Mustangs made one more run to shave the lead to 10, 41-31, on Walsh’s floater from inside the paint with 5:41 left in the game, but coming out of a timeout, Elkins scored the next six points and drained off all the drama.
In their next postseason test, the Knights meet Houston Lamar. The Texans eliminated Cy Creek 66-51 Tuesday.
The Travis Tigers survived overtime and their playoff opener vs. Cinco Ranch, 66-65. Next, Travis meets Houston Math Science & Tech. Also advancing were the Bush Broncos, 51-36 over Mayde Creek, to set up a second-round date with Spring Woods.
The only Katy ISD team to beat a Fort Bend boys team in the first round, Morton Ranch, beat Ridge Point 91-71 on Monday, and the Mavericks will play Bellaire in Round Two.
In Class 5A, FBISD’s Hightower Hurricanes boys’ and girls’ teams are still rolling in the playoffs. The Lady ‘Canes crushed Foster 64-44 – the third time this season they’ve beaten the Falcons – and they’ll battle Magnolia West Friday to try to earn a spot in the Region III final.
The Hurricane boys knocked out Houston Sterling 73-63 Monday, and will now meet Barbers Hill Thursday night.
