SUGAR LAND (Covering Fort Bend News) – Two games into the District 20-6A baseball season, it’s already time to round up the usual suspects who claim the top two spots in the standings – Ridge Point and Travis. The Panthers and Tigers, the only teams 2-0 in district play, meet for the first of their two head-to-head clashes March 22, and junior pitcher Hayde Key fired a warning shot Thursday in a 9-0 whitewashing of Austin.

Key retired the first nine Bulldog batters in order, only allowing Porter Cox’s single to lead off the bottom of the fourth and a pair of harmless walks. The right-hander struck out 14 in his 111-pitch outing.

The Spring Break week’s schedule of games gives all of Fort Bend ISD’s 6A teams Friday off, so Key will have seven nights to re-charge before he takes the mound next Friday vs. Travis.

Catcher Will Pendergrass is 6-for-9 in the first two district games. Pendergrass belted three doubles in Tuesday night’s 14-1 win over Kempner, driving home three runs, and added an RBI triple against Austin. Justin Vossos was the biggest Panthers’ run-producer in the blowout of the Bulldogs, going 1-for-3 with three RBI. Preston Steszewski was 2-for-4.

Travis kept pace with a 12-2 domination of the Dulles Vikings, following their Tuesday night 6-3 triumph over Elkins, a game broadcast live on VYPE.

In other 20-6A action, Kempner rebounded from its loss at Ridge Point to overcome Bush Thursday, 10-7, in another VYPE-broadcasted game. Kempner, Dulles, Clements and Elkins (an 8-6 winner over Clements Thursday) are tied for third place in the 20-6A standings at 1-1.

Austin and Bush are 0-2. The good news for those teams is that they get to play at home when games resume Tuesday, but the bad news is that the visiting teams are Travis (at Austin) and Ridge Point (at Bush).
