LIVE BROADCAST: Westside’s Barrage of 3-pointers Knocks Kempner Out of Girls’ Playoffs

HOUSTON (Covering Fort Bend News) – Even though Westside had beaten Cy Falls by 50 points (80-30) in Monday’s playoff opener, the girls from Kempner and their head coach, Melynda McGregor, truly believed they had a shot at upsetting the Wolves.

Kempner’s lock-down defense limited Katy Taylor to only six first half points on the way to the Cougars’ 47-28 win in their playoff opener.

Unfortunately for Kempner, reality set in early during their second round encounter with Westside at Delmar Fieldhouse – but what long-range shooting specialist Helena Johnson did was absolutely unreal. She scored 21 points, all on three-point shots, going 7-for-11 and leading the Wolves to a 68-44 win. She was so deadly from outside, Stephen Curry would’ve been impressed.

Westside (30-5) had three other starters scoring in double figures: Jessica Soders with 17 (5-for-10 shooting plus 7-for-8 at the free-throw line), Kayla Pilson and Jordon Lewis (11 each). Mariam Yaro (12) and Jaiden Eaton (10) were the high scorers for the Cougars.

Now, Westside meets Jersey Village Tuesday night at Katy ISD’s Merrell Center in a clash of girls’ hoops titans.

Kempner (20-16) fell behind 20-8 after one quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 52-32 after three periods. McGregor said prior to the game that the key to controlling the high-scoring Westside offense was controlling the Wolves biggest player, 6’4” post Fatou Samb. The Cougars limited her to six points, but that opened up the floodgates for the Wolves’ outside shooting.

Fort Bend ISD’s Class 6A girls’ teams are all done for the year, as Ridge Point also fell Friday night. Last year’s state semifinalists, the Cy Creek Cougars, beat the Panthers 82-60 at Spring Branch ISD’s Coleman Coliseum. Ridge Point (31-5) had a 16-game win-streak entering the matchup.

One Fort Bend ISD girls’ team is still alive, though. In Class 5A, the Hightower Hurricanes crushed Waltrip, 82-19, and Crosby, 91-47, in their first two playoff games. In the third round, they’ll face the Foster Falcons, district rivals they’ve already beaten twice this season. Foster beat Goose Creek Memorial 63-53 at Delmar in the game played before Kempner and Westside took the floor.
