KATY/FORT BEND COUNTY (Covering Katy News) - A Houston criminal with a history of stealing from churches has been arrested and charged with burglarizing the Katy Islamic Center.
Loyd Richard Smith Jr., 40, has admitted his guilt according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office. As of late Wednesday morning he was still at the county jail charged with two counts of burglary of a building.
Smith was arrested Tuesday in the 3700 block of Center Street on Houston's southeast side, a long distance from Katy.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Smith first targeted the Katy Islamic Center on December 1, 2018. They say he burglarized the center again on April 12, 2019. In both incidents, the suspect is said to have broken into the center and stole cash and checks from the donation boxes.
"Smith Jr. has a lengthy criminal record across several counties and theft of religious centers appears to be an objective for him," said a press release from the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.
“I am very grateful that our detectives were able to identify and locate this suspect,” said Sheriff Troy Nehls.
