KATY (Covering Katy News) - Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Constable Wayne Thompson is not ruling out a run for Sheriff now that Troy Nehls says he’s not going to seek re-election. In a social media post Thompson say people want him to run.
“I have received media calls, phone calls, emails, texts, instant messages, etc. asking me to run. Overwhelming support and encouragement,” Thompson wrote.
It’s likely that the calls from the media were simply asking if he was going to run rather than encouraging him to do so. Thompson has already said he plans to run for re-election to be Constable of Precinct 3, but that was prior to the Nehls announcing that he would not seek re-election.
Nehls and Thompson, both Republican, have battled publicly at times. Nehls also battled with the previous Precinct 3 Constable and recruited Thompson to run in his place. The honeymoon did not last.
The most notable feud came when Nehls stopped dispatching emergency calls to the nearest available units – often times deputy constables - in favor of dispatching only to sheriff’s units. Nehls position is that constables can hear the call on the radio and respond if they choose to do so. Thompson claims Nehls is putting politics over public safety.
In the meantime, Thompson says he has people asking if he’d like to run for Nehls' seat.
“I will not answer that question at this time,” Constable Thompson said.
Thompson has been very critical of fellow Republican Nehls and he didn’t pull any punches on what he’d do differently if voters chose him to be the next Fort Bend County Sheriff.
“I will tell you what your next sheriff will need to address and acknowledge in Fort Bend County,” Thompson wrote.
1. Gangs and gang activities. Yes we have them. From Aryan Brotherhood to MS-13 to Banditos. They are here and they have been.
2. Animal Cruelty issues. Yes we have them and it’s verifiable. Our office has worked 19 complaints in about a month and a half. Animal cruelty issues are almost always accompanied by other criminal activities.
3. Human Trafficking in every form. Both labor and sex trafficking of adults and children currently exist in our area.
. Prostitution is also a concern and it’s not the kind you see on the street corners. It’s accomplished via other means.
5. The new Sheriff will have to restore working relationships with other Law Enforcement agencies and not use county equipment (dispatch) to exert punishment on agencies that don’t follow the Sheriff’s will.
Sheriff Nehls declined to comment on Thompson’s social media post.
