KATY (Covering Katy News) - Beer, pies in the face, and basic information were all part of the Giving Tuesday Katy event held Tuesday night at the No Label Brewery on First Street in Katy.

Many of the nonprofit organizations had tables that were staffed with people who provided answers to questions people had about their services. Each nonprofit was not only hoping for donations, but also volunteers who could help them provide services to the public.

For a donation people could also buy pies and toss them at the leaders of each nonprofit. There were also food trucks, music and of course great locally produced beer for sale.

"It's a great event. We've got so many wonderful nonprofits in Katy and this is a great opportunity for them to all come together and show what they are about," said Mayor Bill Hastings. "I don't think that people come close to understanding all that these organizations do for our community."

"Giving Tuesday is a wonderful way for the community to learn about the nonprofits, what we do and who we are, said Tina Hatcher of Hope Impacts which provides services for homeless individuals.

According to the Hope Impacts website there are 600-700 children who live within the boundaries of Katy ISD who are homeless at any one time.

While some Katy nonprofits say donations this year have been down across the board, former Mayor Don Elder is confident that people will continue to support organizations that are helping those in need here in Katy.

"Donations are down but people step up to the plate when it's in their town and continue to help in anyway that they can," Elder said.

The Giving Tuesday Katy organization will be totaling up the donations received on the national day of giving and hopes to release its numbers later this month.

Helping to promote the event was Katy area resident Tom Zizka, a Fox 26 news anchor, who provided a live news report from the event.
