Fire Hydrant Flushing

A fire hydrant being flushed.

CITY OF KATY (Covering Katy News) - The City of Katy Water Department will be flushing hydrants beginning Wednesday, December 4. The hydrant flushing will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The flushing may cause low water pressure as well as some discoloration of water, but this does not represent a health hazard.

If you experience discolored water, run the cold water in all your faucets for approximately 5-10 minutes or open the outside faucet closest to your water meter for several minutes before using the water. However, residents are cautioned to determine if the water is clear before washing clothes (or any other processing) as staining may occur.

Flushing hydrants can be done to test the water flow capacity in the event of a fire, and also to remove sediment and rust from the water, or to maintain proper chlorine concentrations in your area.
