KATY/HARRIS COUNTY (Covering Katy News) – A Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot late Friday night after responding to a disturbance call on Plantation Creek near West Little York, a short distance east of North Fry Road. (See map below.)
The call resulted after a man allegedly broke into his ex-wife’s house and the woman called 911 at about 11:15 p.m.
“Our primary deputy, the one who arrived first, was struck by the suspect’s gunfire,” said Major Tony Huynh of the Harris County Sheriffs’ Office. “At about the same time a secondary deputy arrived at the scene. That deputy engaged with the suspect,” Huynh added.
According to Huynh, the deputy was shot in the “lower torso.”
It was not immediately known if the suspect was injured when the secondary deputy returned fire. The scene remained active for hours after the shooting with hostage negotiators attempting to get the gunman to surrender. Meanwhile, the injured deputy was taken to the hospital.
“The secondary deputy immediately pulled him to safety and transported him by patrol car to the nearest hospital here in Katy, Methodist Hospital, and from there he was Lifeflighted to Memorial Herman Hospital downtown,” Huynh told reporters on the scene.
The deputy was in stable condition when he went to the operating room. At this time we have no information on the condition of the suspect.
Hostage negotiators were on the scene attempting to get the suspect to surrender when we last talked with investigators.
The ex-wife is safe and was with deputies shortly after the shooting. She was cooperating with their investigation, providing a statement.
