HOUSTON (Covering Katy News) – Students from kindergarten through college can ride METRO free from June 1 – Sept. 1, 2018, with the Summer of Fun program. The program allows students to free anywhere METRO goes, including Katy, with a Student METRO Q Fare Card.

“Instead of spending cash on fuel, insurance, and other car-related expenses, students can save their money for other things like school supplies, clothing and entertainment,” said METRO Board First Vice-Chair Jim Robinson.

A group of students from Houston’s Westbury High School joined METRO Board members for the official announcement Tuesday.

“Anything free is wonderful. It will be very cost efficient for students like me getting from school to work,” said Jeremy Sanders, a senior at Westbury.

Now in its second year, the program has been expanded to include more students. Those already holding a Student METRO Q Fare Card can continue using it but will not be charged during the summer months.  There are three ways to apply if you don’t have one.

Last year, thousands participated in the Summer of Fun following METRO Board approval of the program. Board Member Sanjay Ramabhadran spearheaded the initiative.

“When my METRO Board colleagues and I started the Summer of Fun a year ago, we saw that it helped not just youngsters but also their parents. It’s often said that education is the key to success. I would reply that public transportation is a close second because it’s an enabler. It gives you access to education and opportunity, and we at METRO are glad we can play a small role in doing so,” said  Ramabhadran.

Summer programs and camps with more than 10 students can sign up their entire group by contacting, Karen Marshall at or call 713-739-4980.
