KATY/HARRIS COUNTY (Covering Katy News) – Harris County Constable Ted Heap and his deputies now have the ability to work from the sky with two new drones that will soon be taking to the air, after they are fully registered with the Federal Aviation Administration.

“These drones will be used by Precinct 5 deputies for things like tracking down suspects, locating lost kids and investigating deadly crashes,” Heap said. “They will be equipped with long range cameras and video as well as some pretty advanced thermal imaging capabilities to help us in our law enforcement duties.”

The FFA requires that drones have a name before they are registered, so Constable Heap held a contest to name the them.

“We had an overwhelming number of suggestions, many of them were strong candidates,” Heap said.

More than 100 suggestions were made by the public according to the constable.

The names selected were Maverick and Goose, who were the two prime characters from the 1986 hit movie Top Gun. In the movie hot-shot Navy pilot Maverick, played by Tom Cruise and his co-pilot Goose, played by Anthony Edwards compete to be the best in their class at the Naval fighter weapons school known as Top Gun.

Precinct 5 has already has deputies who are officially licensed drone pilots.  There are more deputies in the pipline who are taking classes and earning their certification. Heap wants to have drone pilots on every shift.
