HOUSTON (Covering Katy News) – A Harris County grand jury indicted a former sheriff’s deputy Thursday for a fatal shooting in March, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.

The indictment charges fired Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cameron Brewer with Aggravated Assault by a Public Servant for causing the death of Danny Thomas, an unarmed civilian.

The first-degree felony carries a penalty of up to life in prison.

“Our democracy depends on the public’s trusting that police are here to protect us,” Ogg said. “When they exceed their lawful authority, our community holds them accountable, and that’s exactly what this grand jury of ordinary citizens did.”

Brewer was fired by the Sheriff’s Office in April for not adhering to the Sheriff’s Office Use of Force Policy.
