HOUSTON (Covering Katy News) - A stolen dually pickup truck reached speeds of more than 120 miles per hour during a chase on the Katy Freeway early Thursday morning according to the Houston Police Department.

The chase started at about 3 a.m. when an HPD officer attempted to stop the stolen pickup at Highway 290 near Mangum. The driver led police on a chase along the 610 loop, to the Katy Freeway. He crashed in front of a mid rise office building along the service road of the Katy Freeway at North Kirkwood as he was attempting to change directions.

"At North Kirkwood he was attempting to make a turn and he lost control and went into a fountain-irrigation pond and was taken into custody without incident," said Lt. Larry Crowson, of the Houston Police Department.

Even though the truck reached high speeds, Crowson said officers were able to limit the danger involved.

"It was on the freeway most of the pursuit so that always helps us and fortunately our helicopter was overhead so the officers (in ground units) were able to back up a little bit and pursue from a safe distance," Crowson said.

There were no injuries and the investigation is ongoing.
