KATY, HARRIS COUNTY (Covering Katy News) - A young man who was found shot to death inside a car in the 1050 block of Katy Fort Bend Road late Monday night has been identified through a social media post from Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
"The deceased male has been identified as Jakobi Xavier Mitchell," Gonzalez wrote. He also confirmed that the boy was 17-years old.
Gonzalez urged those who have tips to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS with any information.
The car that Mitchell was riding in stopped in the middle of the road by the Katy Elks Lodge which is about two blocks north of the Katy Freeway. It's occupants signaled a City of Katy police officer for help. It was about 11:40 p.m.
Detectives say the shooting happened a short distance away at the Olympus Katy Ranch Apartments, 24929 Katy Ranch Road, which is a short distance south of the Katy Freeway off Katy Fort Bend Road.
The car that Mitchell was riding in had bullet holes in it. He was dead before police could call for medical help.
"There were several occupants in the vehicle with the victim - two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old, said Harris County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Greg Pinkins.
"As of right now we don't have a motive for the shooting, Pinkins said early Tuesday morning.
Detectives were attempting to determine the identity of the gunman. They interviewed the witnesses who were in the car with the victim. They also had detectives at the apartment complex looking for evidence and attempting to interview anyone who knew what led up to the shooting.
The investigation is being handled by the Harris County Sheriff's Office because the shooting happened in unincorporated Harris County. The location where the victim stopped for help is located on the dividing line between the City of Katy and unincorporated Harris County.
