About Us

Dennis Spellman

Dennis Spellman has been a professional broadcast journalist for more than 30 years and spent the past decade on Houston radio and television stations like 740 KTRH, KIAH-TV CW39, and KROI News 92 FM.

Before coming to Houston, Dennis was the news director at WGAN radio and a news anchor at WMTW television in Portland, Maine.

News may be in his blood, as there’s a family legend about a Spellman being the town crier back in Ireland.

In addition to journalism, Dennis has worked as an executive in the public and nonprofit sectors. He was a business analyst for Dun & Bradstreet in Boston before coming to Houston. Here, he was the vice president of External Affairs and Information Technology at the Houston Housing Authority, and vice president of the board at Houston Housing Resource, which helps people in public housing achieve self-sufficiency.

Dennis has earned numerous first place radio news awards from the Associated Press and an Emmy nomination for his television investigative reporting, in addition to the Francis C. Moore, MD, Medical Journalism Award from the Harris County Medical Society.

Dennis and his family live in Cinco Ranch.

Tim Bristow

Tim Bristow is the man who patrols the streets of Katy in the middle of the night, gathering news while the rest of us are sleeping. His work is not only featured on Covering Katy, it is regularly seen on Houston television stations KPRC Channel 2, KHOU Channel 11 and others. Tim has been working as a field videographer for more than 20 years, taking pictures and gathering facts. Thanks to Tim, Covering Katy is able to report the news 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Julia Cameron

Copy Editor

Julia is a career copy editor who has been with Covering Katy News since 2015. She has edited syndicated columns for distribution to national and international newspapers and continues to do so along with her role at Covering Katy. So many of us come from a broadcasting background that Julia keeps our stories in AP style and factually correct.

George Slaughter

George Slaughter is our reporter for the City of Katy, known to many as Old Katy, or Historic Katy. When the city council meets, or the Katy Tigers football team plays it’s likely going to be George who covers the event for us. He’s been working for Covering Katy since 2015 but he’s also the principal at Onion Creek Productions, a business writing services and publishing company. He is the author of the e-book “Quick Tips for Improving Your Technical Writing” (Onion Creek Productions, March 2016), a collection of tips gleaned from his technical writing experiences. George is also a historian. He is the author of “Spring Branch” (Arcadia Publishing, 2011), a pictorial history of the West Houston neighborhood area. He is a contributor to the “Handbook of Texas Online,” published by the Texas State Historical Association. His Texana Thursday blog appears on his website, georgeslaughter.com. George began his career as a journalist, where he worked as a reporter for two newspapers. He later worked for the City of San Antonio and was a freelance writer. George and his family live in Cinco Ranch.
